WILLIAM JOSEPH "BILL" CROMPTON AND
FLORENCE LARKIN-CROMPTON FAMILY
William and Florence Crompton
William Joseph "Bill" Crompton was born to Joseph Crompton and Carolyn Hegler-Crompton on October 3rd, 1924 in Ogden, UT, two days after future US President Jimmy Carter was born. It was a few weeks before Republican Calvin Coolidge defeated Democrat John W. Davis to become President of the United States, and the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade would be held in New York city.
Florence was born to Senator John "Jack" Larkin Jr. and Loretta Ryan-Larkin in 1926 Omaha, NE, where she met and married Bill. It was the same month US Route 66 was established.
About the Larkins:
Michael Larkin, Jr. Was born in 1826 Kilkenny, Ireland, to Michael Larkin, Sr. Michael Jr. immigrated to America circa 1866. Michael married Alice Quinn, who was born in 1823 Ballenagh, Parish Windgap, Kilkenny, Ireland, and had also immigrated to America. Michael Larkin was a stonecutter by trade, and worked on the State Capital in Albany, New York. Michael and Alice lived in Ottawa, Illinois for awhile, then farmed for three years in Burlington, KS, and eventually retired in Chicago, Illinois. The two had five children.
A large, devout, Irish-Catholic family, the Larkin descendents would locate from the east to the midwest. The Larkins have many priests and nuns in their family, and two generations of the Larkins have served Nebraska State Senate terms while living in Omaha, Nebraska (John "Jack" Larkin, and John "Jack" Larkin Jr.), in the 1920's and the late 1940's. The elder John Larkin Sr. was a funeral director, and two of his sons (Senator John Jr. and Michael Larkin) would open seperate Larkin Funeral Homes, in Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, respectively. The funeral homes were operated by family for over a century, and the Omaha operation is still in the Larkin family.
Senator John "Jack" Larkin
Bill was a WW II pilot, and moved on to enjoy a career as an Electrical Engineer with Western Electric. He would marry Florence Elizabeth Larkin on June 18th, 1949, the year US President Harry Truman began his full term.
Bill and Florence raised three sons (William, Tom, James) and the baby, (daughter Theresa), while moving from Omaha to Chicago to Denver, settling in Aurora, Colorado.
Bill was an expert fly fisherman and tied his own flies for the many fishing outings he and Florence would take their children to enjoy. Bill and Florence would retire in the 1990's in Aurora, Colorado, where Bill enjoyed gardening and working on his many hobbies. He loved spending time with his grandkids, for which he was an amazing role model.
William Joseph "Bill" Crompton died October 8th, 2006. Florence would pass on Christmas morning, 2014, with all four of her children at her bedside, in Greeley, Colorado. Their children are all raising their own families in Colorado and Oregon today. Bill and Florence are buried together in Fort Logan Cemetary, Denver, CO.
