Larkin Lineage: Michael Jr-Michael

Robert P. Larkin was the youngest child born to Michael Larkin, Jr, and Alice Quinn-Larkin, on 3/25/1867, in West Hurley, New York, a few years after the family emigrated from Kilkenny Ireland with his four older brothers and sisters. It was the year African-Americans were given the right to vote in the United States. The first elevated railroad in the United States begins service in New York that year, no doubt a thrill to the newly located Larkin family. Charles Dickens would give his first public reading in New York in December of that year.

While Robert was the only one in the family that was born in the United States, his family would tell stories of life in the Larkin homeland of Ireland. Robert's brother Thomas would recall his earliest memories of Ireland, where as a child he remembered hearing the cry of the Banshees.

Mary Agnes Rafferty was born in 1906 Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, to Daniel Patrick Rafferty of Armagh, Ireland, and Mary Ann Flagherty of Waterford, Ireland. Mary Ann's parents were Mary Ann's parents Michael Flagherty of Kerry, Ireland, and Mary Dugan, of Cork, Ireland.

The two would marry and raise their five children in Sioux City, Iowa. Robert worked at the Cudahy Meat Packing Plant for several years before changing careers to open Larkin Funeral Home with the help of his brother John Larkin, Sr. in 1915. John was a mortician in Omaha, Nebraska, where his son, Senator John Larkin, Jr, operated another Larkin Funeral Home. Robert's son Phillip would join the Sioux City funeral home operations in the 1930's, and continue to operate the business until his death in 1970. His wife and two sons would continue business operations.

Robert and Mary lived the last three decades of their lives in Sioux City, Iowa, where they are buried at St. Calvary Cemetary. The Larkin Funeral Home remained in the Robert and Mary Larkin family until the 21st Century, when it was finally sold to another firm.
